Straczynski’s characterisation of Loki is that of the Shakespearean villain, whispering here and suggesting there, the purpose remaining the same as it ever was. ![]() They’ve survived Ragnarok, what was supposed to be the end of days, so what is their purpose now? There is, of course, one among them to whom purpose has never been obscured. Straczynski also investigates a questioning of purpose among the Asgardians. These, however, lack the gravitas of Odin’s secret, one that feeds into what Thor has so far been doing. This rolls logically onward from the cliffhanger ending to the previous book, and cleverly addresses much of the early family issues between Odin, a young Thor and a young Loki, most of which would be transplanted wholesale to the move Thor: The Dark World. ![]() Once ruler of Asgard, we learn how this came to be the case amid some splendid battle scenes provided by Marko Djurdjević. Thor’s managed to repopulate it with most of the original Asgardians, but there’s been a couple of glaring absentees, and Straczynski addresses the fate of Odin in the opening tale. Asgard no longer hangs somewhere indefinable in space, it’s suspended above the scrubland of Broxton in Oklahoma. Michael Straczynski and Oliver Coipel reconfigured Thor and Asgard, literally from the ground up. ![]()

When using Extremis, Tony can interface with his brain’s repair center, which allows him to rebuild his body from scratch. It’s almost like a commercial break chopping up the narrative. One thing common to most of Iron Man’s recent suits is the integration of Extremis, an attempt to re-create the super-soldier serum with many modifications. There’s very little indication of movement at all here, which makes the scenes with several pages of no dialogue land worse than they might ordinarily. Adi Granov paints nice portraits, but man are they ever static. The art in Iron Man: Extremis is similarly dichotomous. His tale of an embittered Church of Scotland minister confronted by the reality of evil was exceptional not just because it asked such huge questions of itself and then answered them so successfully, but because in writing it at all Robertson was taking a direct swipe at one of Scotland's key texts, James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His first novel, The Fanatic, dealt with the Covenanters the second, Joseph Knight, took on the slave trade and his third, The Testament of Gideon Mack, gave Satan himself a starring role.
